Social media exit strategy: slow and steady

Hi Reader,

I've been divesting from FB and IG over the past couple weeks.

I must confess that at the first thought of it, I felt anxious.

What about my friends? What about networking? What about fun?

As I sat with the idea of divesting, I realized that I was the one caring for and attending to most of the ongoing conversations with colleagues on IG. Anyone with whom I have a truly reciprocal relationship is connected with me in other ways.

I also remembered that my stats over the years have shown, time and time again, that none of my new client inquiries come from social media. I've had literally two inquiries in the 8-ish years I've been on FB and IG for business.

So I decided to take the leap.

I know there are arguments in favour and against. What you decide to do has to be aligned with your values and needs.

In case you have decided to take a look at what might be possible for you, here are some resources that have been really helpful for me:

1) Mad at Meta? Don't let them collect your personal data

It turns out even if you aren't on FB, Meta's tentacles are all over the internet. I did all the things in this guide and that helped me feel better about my mitigated use of FB (only to stay in touch with real life friends who are far away).

2) Social media break: a 100-day guide

You might decide just to take a break and see what happens. My dear friend and colleague and SEO expert Meg Casebolt has always had a very successful business without social media. It's entirely due to her programs that I have such good SEO and in fact the great majority (75% or more depending on the year) of my new client calls come from Google search. If you're curious about SEO and want an easy way to start, check out Love at First Search.

3) Social Media Exit Strategy Workshop

If you're ready to exit but feeling overwhelmed, I've just learned about this exit strategy workshop. I don't know Amanda Laird, who runs Slow and Steady Studio, I just subscribe to her newsletter, but I've liked what I've seen so far and thought I'd share the information on her workshop. Early bird pricing is on now until February 5!REGISTER FOR THE WORKSHOP

What does all this have to do with mental health for entrepreneurs?

Anything that's stressing you out in your business affects your mental health! It's as simple as that.

Here's a podcast with Meg Casebolt of Love at First Search where we talk about just that. Meg also has a book all about marketing without social media.

I hope these resources have been supportive.

In gratitude,

PS If you are feeling really stressed about social media, marketing, or your business as a whole? Running a business shouldn't come at the cost of your mental health. Why not schedule a free call to discuss how I can support you?

Hello Reader, I was so excited to talk to Mariah Scrivens, host of the Make it Happen podcast, because: 1) She's actually local to me!! (I live in a rural area in southeastern Ontario so most of the biz folks I meet online are far from me) 2) I felt so validated!! It's rare that I feel validated! I'm usually the one doing the validating. You have to listen in because this two-part conversation is just so delicious. Part 1 (20 minutes) :...
